Glazing Kitchen Cabinets

One of the biggest projects we've taken on in our house so far has been refinishing the kitchen cabinets. We have honey oak kitchen cabinets that are in pretty bad shape:

We want to replace them all eventually, but that's just not something we're able to do right now, so we decided to refinish them somehow. I came across directions on an other blog for how to glaze cabinets and decided it was the perfect solution!

First, we had to take down all of the doors and sand them to remove the finish.
The sanding took a few days, but it's probably the most important part, so we took our time.

After that, we were able to mix the clear mixing glaze with the paint (Benjamin Moore Branchport Brown). We used 4 parts glaze to 1 part paint and painted two coats on all of the cabinets, doors, and drawers.

After we sanded, we put two coats of polyurethane on everything and were able to add the new hardware.

Finally, we hung all of the cabinet doors and saw the transformation!

We also bought a new bamboo roman shade and a pendant light for above the sink.

  1. I LOVE this idea! We have the same type of cabinets, and I've wanted to paint them white since we first moved it...but DH loves the wood. I think this may be the perfect compromise!
Thanks so much for showing the before and afters!

  3. Great job! We actually just purchased a home and want to re-stain the cabinets for an updated, fresher look (you can see them at my blog - www.cookiesandcocktails.blogspot.com)

How many days did this project take? How did you know what products to buy? (I was thinking of taking a door into home depot and asking them what tools I would need)

    Thanks!

  4. I was home on vacation in February and took the week the do the project. I started sanding on Sunday and everything was done and re-hung by the following Saturday. I probably could've done it even faster if I had more room to spread out all of the doors that were drying!

I knew what products to use because I followed the directions in the blog I linked above.

    Good luck!
